FinMark would like to better understand the role of cooperative financial institutions (CFIs ) as a viable alternative to the commercial banking sector for accessing financial services for lower income individuals. The findings will be used to help bring focus to and validate a model that is an extremely pertinent and viable model, and very important for sustainable development. In order to achieve this, understandings of the type of people who join CFIs, the type of products and services they use and their success stories is necessary. A study of CFI’s in three countries, South Africa, Malawi and Swaziland will hopefully raise the appetite for participation in the sector which may help position the sector as an important financial services participant in the provision and utilisation of financial services. The findings of the study will provide a benchmark to the regulators with regards to the regulation and development of the CFI sector. And will serve as a guide to the public at large to inform them about the sector and hopefully spark interest in the formation of new CFIs.
